This morning 161 deportees landed in Haiti. They are the first group to be deported since Temporary Protected Status ended on July 27th. Until that day, they were living in the U.S. legally with no pathway to citizenship. The group arrived in the northern Haitian city of Cap-Haitien because the main international airport in Port-au-Prince is considered too dangerous.

Included in the group are Dominicans who were born in the Dominican Republic to Haitian parents but because of the country’s anti-Haitian laws they are not considered citizens and so they were sent to Haiti.

Deportees told reporters all they were offered by Haitian officials was $65 and water. They have nowhere to go, most of them do not have family in Haiti and have lived much of their lives in the U.S.
