hereswhykevin A federal judge has ruled that GEO Group will face a jury trial over the 2021 COVID-related death of Martin Vargas Arellano, a 55-year-old man who was detained at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California. Court documents show Vargas Arellano repeatedly asked to be released from the facility as COVID spread. He told the staff about his serious health conditions including diabetes, liver disease, high blood pressure and other illnesses that put him at high risk. Recently, court documents revealed that symptomatic staff were allowed into the facility at least 47 times, despite pandemic rules requiring symptomatic workers to be turned away. These staffers put detainees at risk. After contracting COVID-19, Vargas Arellano developed pneumonia, was hospitalized, underwent brain surgery following a fall and suffered a stroke. He died days after ICE released him from custody while he was brain-dead and comatose. A jury will now decide whether GEO Group is responsible for his death.
