downinnadesertaz Federal immigration agents conducted a traffic stop on Gila River Indian Community land Saturday morning and arrested three men. Tribal police responded to the scene but say they were not part of it. According to the Community, the stop happened outside the Akimel Smoke Shop off Riggs Road near Interstate 10. The three men taken into custody were not enrolled members or residents. Nothing else about them has been released. Tribal leaders issued a written statement saying they take encroachment upon the Community’s sovereignty with the utmost seriousness and urgency, and that they were informed of the incident but had no involvement in it. They also put out an advisory to their own members. Know your rights. Carry tribal identification at all times. If federal agents approach you, clearly identify yourself as a U.S. citizen and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community. And record any encounter. ICE did not respond to requests for comment. Send us your stories to be featured on the page. #GilaRiver #Arizona #Phoenix #ArizonaNews #DownInnaDesert View all 15 comments
