ICE agents in Long Beach, California discussed using facial-recognition technology to identify and track down woman from a TikTok comment after she allegedly admitted to being undocumented, according to text messages obtained by the ACLU.

In the July 2, 2025 exchange, one agent asks:

“Can we pull facial rec off of profile pics of people who are self admitting in tik tok comments”

The agent clarifies:

“To being illegal”

After sharing an image of a woman’s profile picture, the agent asks:

“This bitch good enought to facial rec?”

The agent laughs at the woman who he says was “literally commenting about how she’s not a criminal and just hard working.”

The other agent responds that there was “No match.”

The first agent responds:

“Some of these people are stupid. Why would you post on social media that you’re wet”

“Wet” is short for “wetback” — an anti-Latino slur that was popularized during Eisenhower’s ‘Operation Wetback,’ the mass deportation experiment that Trump says inspired him.

This text exchange raises questions about surveillance, due process, and how many immigration agents are monitoring the social media activity of their targets before they track them down.

A person on TikTok comment should not have to wonder whether federal agents are trying to run their face through a biometric database.
