Federal immigration agents took a man into custody at Summit Avenue and 21st Street in Union City on Monday, August 17, 2026, according to a witness.
The witness said three ICE vehicles pulled up and detained a man who was sitting on the corner with a friend. According to the witness, the man provided identification before masked agents handcuffed him, took his bag, checked his pockets, and took him away.
In March, Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed a law barring federal, state, county, and municipal law enforcement officers from wearing masks or disguises while interacting with the public during official duties. The law includes exceptions for undercover work and officers facing threats of retaliation. Since it took effect, ICE has continued to conduct operations with masked agents, and the Trump administration has said it will not comply with the ban.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has an ongoing policy of not commenting on active investigations or arrests.
The report is the latest in a series of immigration enforcement actions across Hudson County in recent weeks, including previous incidents reported in West New York, Guttenberg, North Bergen, and Weehawken.
