Daysi Munoz and her husband were back-to-school shopping at a Walmart in Burleson, Texas in August 2025 when Burleson police arrested her on suspicion of shoplifting. The police report lists a mop, toilet paper, and crab meat. Munoz says they forgot items at the bottom of the cart and were trying to pay. That arrest handed her over to 🧊 Her daughters had to say goodbye to her in the store parking lot. She hugged 19-year-old Dulce Zepeda and told her to take care of her little sister. About 40 days later, both parents were deported to Honduras. Dulce and 13-year-old Maria are U.S. citizens with every right to stay. So at 19, Dulce became the parent. Cooking. Driving Maria to middle school. Working at McDonald’s. Selling her mother’s jewelry to pay the bills. “You never know whenever is the last hug that you’re going to have from your parents,” Dulce said. Munoz says she told 🧊 over and over she wanted to take her girls with her, and 🧊 told her that wasn’t possible unless she agreed to spend at least four or five more months in a detention center.
