so.mexican A 21-year-old pregnant mother and her infant son have been held at an immigration detention facility in Dilley, Texas, for more than a month, according to her family and advocates. Laura Rojas Ortiz, who is five months pregnant, was detained after reporting for a routine ICE check-in in Dallas. Her mother says she had been regularly checking in with immigration officials and wearing an ankle monitor while beginning the process of applying for a U visa, which is available to certain crime victims who assist law enforcement. Her family says Rojas Ortiz has now spent more than 40 days detained with her son. Her mother says the pregnancy is considered high-risk and claims she has not received an ultrasound, blood tests or an examination by a specialist. Her mother also alleges Rojas Ortiz was temporarily moved into a medical room while lawmakers toured the facility, then released from the room after they left. Immigrant advocates argue her detention conflicts with ICE guidance generally discouraging detention of people known to be pregnant, postpartum or nursing except under certain circumstances. DHS has previously denied broader allegations that detainees are being denied proper medical care, saying people in ICE custody receive medical services, including women’s health care and emergency treatment.
