sovereign_media_ 55-year-old pastor Gabriel Johnson, a Liberian immigrant, suffered a stroke while being held at an ICE detention centre, his family says. Johnson’s daughter, Gabri, stated that her father did not receive his prescribed medication or sufficient food and water while detained. The family says Johnson is now paralysed on the left side of his body following the stroke. In an Instagram video posted last week, Gabri said, “I got a call from the hospital in Texas today saying that my father was rushed there after having a stroke … Like he’s been telling them, give me my medication, give me food, give me water. They laughed at him. They refused. My father had a stroke, and the left side of his body is completely paralysed right now. ICE is fully responsible for this.” Johnson’s case reflects the ongoing concerns with people held under ICE detention. People subjected to ICE detention report everything from sexual abuse to denial of food and water, among other mistreatment. Johnson himself has had state authorisation to live within the US since he was 15. Now, at 55 years old, his life is being threatened as Trump’s notorious immigration policy imposes further havoc on American society, particularly on migrant communities. Johnson is not the first case in which someone with state authorisation has been detained and imprisoned by ICE. The recurring instance raises questions regarding what ICE’s purpose is, with many saying their true function is to incite terror and fear among migrant communities and deter dissent against the Trump administration, as they primarily operate in locations that voted against Trump’s bid for the presidency.
