hereswhykevin ICE reportedly collected the DNA of nearly one million people in 2025 and fed their genetic profiles into the FBI’s CODIS database. That is a system built for criminal investigations. According to WIRED, Georgetown Law researchers estimate ICE was responsible for up to 919,908 new DNA profiles last year. Many of the people swept into that database had never been convicted of a crime — being undocumented is a civil immigration violation, it is not a criminal offense. Yet their DNA can now be searched against evidence in unsolved cases for years to come. ICE’s expanded use has reached families and children. Records reviewed by WIRED and Georgetown identified 492 children under the age of 14 whose DNA was sent to the FBI between January 2025 and January 2026. Some of these DNA samples came from children as young as 4 years old. Additionally, ICE sought a contract worth up to $25 million for rapid DNA testing of immigrant families. That would be separate from the FBI’s collection program. ICE is using their increased budget and ramped up enforcement operations to build a permanent federal genetic database, built from people held unlawfully in civil immigration custody — including children.
