hereswhykevin On March 23, Jorge showed up to a scheduled biometrics appointment to get his fingerprints processed, as part of his U visa application. This is pathway to legal status available to victims of serious crimes. Instead, according to his wife, the staff member handling his appointment delayed him, told him to wait, and then contacted immigration authorities. ICE agents entered and detained him on the spot. It’s been reported that staffers have done this before to other immigrants who show up to these appointments. Jorge has no criminal record. He is a survivor of gun violence. His wife is now raising 10-month-old twins on her own. He is currently being held at Delaney Hall, the privately run immigration detention facility in Newark that is facing allegations of abuse, torture, and due process violations. Like many others detained there, Jorge has not received an initial court date to determine whether his detention is even lawful. His wife says he was also supposed to receive a bond hearing through a habeas petition — but that process has stalled. - - - #HeresWhy #DelaneyHall #Immigration #News #Viral View all 82 comments
