texastimesdaily Seven people, including a 14-year-old boy, were found dead from heat stroke inside a Union Pacific boxcar at a rail yard in Laredo, Texas on Sunday. The victims are believed to be immigrants from Mexico and Honduras who were being smuggled inside the airtight container. On Saturday, a woman inside the boxcar called her sister out of state saying it was getting dangerously hot and they were in physical trouble — her sister reported it and San Antonio, Texas police responded but could not locate the train. The boxcar could not be opened from the inside, and outside temperatures hit 97 degrees that day. A 7th body was later found along railroad tracks in Bexar County, Texas, about 150 miles north. This is a painful reminder of the 2022 tragedy in San Antonio, Texas where 53 migrants were found dead in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer — the deadliest human smuggling attempt in U.S. history.
