hereswhykevin Lazaro Romero León, a 59-year-old construction worker from Cuba, was living and worked in Puerto Rico for over 20 years when he was arrested by ICE agents and transferred to Arizona. While in ICE custody, a California judge ordered that he could not be removed but officials quickly deported him to Mexico anyway. They claimed there was a “communication error.” The Mexican government says he needs to be returned to the U.S. but federal officials claim that they haven’t been able to retrieve him. Mexican officials rejected his U.S.-issued IDs for a flight back to the states and he was pulled off a bus because his bus ticket was purchased by his public defender. ICE officials say they don’t know how to get him back to the U.S. meanwhile he is stranded in Mexico sleeping on porches and wearing the same clothes he was wearing the day he was deported back in February. Judge Hernán D. Vera blasted immigration officials in an April 23 hearing and threatened contempt sanctions if they did not retrieve Lazaro from Mexico. “You’re forcing my hand… It’s ridiculous to say we can’t send a van.” The U.S. has deported roughly 6,000 Cubans to Mexico as part of a deal between the two countries.
