mainepublic Several dozen people rallied in Portland on Saturday, calling for the release of a Maine teenager detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement since November. Nineteen year old Olivia Andre, originally of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is detained at an ICE facility in Texas. Peter Seraichick, of Peaks Island, said he became aware of Andre's situation when she started getting national attention from a children's music performer who goes by Ms. Rachel. "I know these kids from the DRC and Angola, and they are just wonderful, wonderful kids who have come through just horrible life experiences," he said. Rosemary Warnock, of Portland, said she's concerned for Andre and others in her situation. "She needs to come home. She needs to be released, along with the many thousands of other people been illegally detained," Warnock said. Andre was detained along with her family after trying to seek asylum in Canada. U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine's 1st District said in a letter to ICE earlier this month that the agency had failed to provide a "clear, written explanation" for Andre's ongoing detention, after her family was released from the same facility in March.
