How far would you go to protect your children? Maria González Medina would travel across borders for her three children.

The family left Ecuador in 2023 to get better medical care for 9-year-old Diego, born with cerebral palsy.

Since coming to New Jersey, Diego’s medical care has improved immensely — but it could all come apart in an instant.

They applied for asylum when entering the country, and have followed every step of the process. Both Maria and her husband have jobs and pay taxes. But if they attend their immigration hearing on Thursday, they may be detained. If they don’t attend, they will likely be made a target for removal.
