He came to Iowa seeking asylum, wearing a GPS monitor as ordered. DhS still tackled him to the ground in front of shoppers. 🛒🇺🇸

A federal judge just called DHS actions “indefensible” — ruling the agency illegally detained him and then tried to “cover their tracks” through misleading legal filings.

Meet Jorge Elieser Gonzalez Ochoa, a 28-year-old Colombian migrant. He was working a shift at the Bread Garden Market in Iowa City on September 25, 2025, when three plainclothes agents entered unannounced.

Bystanders repeatedly asked them to identify themselves. “No identification was made,” a magistrate later found. The footage shows Jorge being pulled outside and forced to the ground. His crime? AGENTS says he used false documents to get a job. His advocates say he was providing for his family while pursuing asylum.

He was already wearing a GPS ankle monitor as required by DHS . The ankle monitor is how they were able to track him. Yet they still cuffed him mid-shift.

A federal judge later ordered him RELEASED from the Muscatine County Jail by 10 a.m. on Dec. 23.

DhS responded by sending a last-second arrest warrant at 9:59 a.m. that same morning, just one minute before the legal deadline. The judge wrote that DHS attempted to “cover their tracks” by later mailing the required paperwork rather than serving it properly on a person already in custody.

Jorge has since pleaded guilty to document fraud charges as part of a deal with prosecutors and is expected to face sentencing.

But the judge’s words still stand. They pulled a man off the sales floor in plainclothes, refused to show ID, and tried to hide a last-minute arrest from the court.
