theirrawaddy ICE arrests five Myanmar asylum seekers in Buffalo April 16, 2026 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained five Myanmar nationals in Buffalo, New York, on Wednesday during a crackdown targeting undocumented migrants. Community members said the men were asylum seekers. One was reportedly arrested while waiting to deliver packages at a warehouse in Pembroke, according to US outlet Newswise. Buffalo is home to one of the largest Myanmar communities in US. The Trump administration moved to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Myanmar citizens last November, arguing that conditions for safe return had been met by the lifting of the state of emergency and the planned election. However, a federal judge indefinitely suspended the termination in January, leaving around 4,000 Myanmar asylum seekers under TPS protected from deportation.
