Douglas Dixon, 61, moved from Montreal to Florida in 2005, where he raised his family and later became a grandfather. After his smoothie business shut down during COVID-19, he fell behind on taxes and pleaded no contest to tax evasion in 2022, entering a repayment plan. He says he paid back most of the amount — but still owed around $12,000. In February, Dixon was unexpectedly arrested by ICE while checking in with his probation officer. He was detained along with 17 others and taken to a controversial immigration facility in the Florida Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” Dixon describes harsh and inhumane conditions — crowded cells, constant noise, limited access to showers and outdoor time — saying detainees were “treated like animals.” Human rights groups and U.S. lawmakers have also raised concerns about the facility, with ongoing lawsuits alleging abuse. Despite letters of support from friends and no history of violent crime, Dixon’s case was decided in minutes. An immigration judge ordered his deportation and issued a lifetime ban from returning to the U.S. After 65 days in detention, he is now being sent back to Canada — leaving behind his wife, children, and grandchildren.
