When the Taliban threatened their lives, the family came to America legally – on humanitarian parole – because that is what America said they could do. Last week, ICE arrested Rihan while he was driving near his home. A federal judge has since confirmed the detention was based on a paperwork error. ICE’s own form had the wrong date. The error was corrected. ICE revoked his parole anyway and moved him to Massachusetts – in defiance of a court order. This is what it looks like when the government decides the rules don’t apply to families it has already decided to target. America made a promise to Zia when he stood beside our troops.
