According to federal data, local hospitals are treating a noticeably higher number of ICE detainees under the Trump administration. At least 59 ICE detainees got care in San Diego County hospitals from January to mid-October of last year, up from 29 for the entire previous year. According to federal data, hospital ICE detentions nationwide increased from roughly 1,300 in 2024 to 1,900 between January and mid-October of 2025.

33 people died while in ICE detention last year, according the most recent federal numbers. Last month, San Diego County sued federal agencies and private prison operator CoreCivic, which manages ICE’s Otay Mesa Detention Center, saying that ICE has not allowed them to perform a thorough health examination of the facility. Otay Mesa Detention Center has held over 1,500 detainees at once.

This dramatic increase in hospitalizations is an illustration of how the adminstration’s racist agenda affects our daily lives. The families and children that are abducted by ICE thugs aren’t treated like human beings while in custody. Detention centers don’t care enough to provide medical attention until it’s severe enough to require a hospital. If it cuts into their profit margin, money means more to a corporation than health and life of working people. Deaths in ICE custody aren’t a coincidence, it’s the result of the system we are fighting against.
