16 women lost their babies in ICE detention.
That's the number our own government admitted to. Only through September 2025. Only because Senator Patty Murray forced them to answer. DHS had stopped reporting this data to Congress entirely.
16 is not the real number. 16 is what they couldn't hide.
Here's what that number looks like up close:
- A woman started bleeding in her cell. She filed sick call requests. No one came. When she was finally taken to the emergency room, she was shackled — arms and legs — while actively losing her baby. She needed a blood transfusion to survive. ICE sent her back to detention that same night. She bled for weeks. No one answered her requests for help.
-A graduate student with a high-risk pregnancy was placed in solitary confinement. When she asked about her missing prenatal vitamins, a nurse told her, "You won't die if you don't take them." After her detention she developed eclampsia and still struggles with postpartum depression from the trauma.
-A woman six months pregnant was denied prenatal care entirely. No vitamins. No checkups. Nothing.
-A visibly pregnant woman was restrained during transport — vomiting, bleeding, with barely any access to water.
-A woman who had just given birth by C-section wasn't given a bed to sleep on while she recovered.
These are not criminals. Most had no criminal record. Some had valid visas. Some had pending applications. One had been living in this country for years with her 9-year-old daughter.
ICE's own policy says they should not detain pregnant women. They did it anyway. 363 pregnant, postpartum, and nursing women deported in just over a year. 86 pregnant women sitting in ICE custody right now. 9 of them in their final trimester.
This is what your tax dollars are funding. This is happening on American soil. Right now.
Per DHS's own response to a Senate oversight inquiry led by Senator Patty Murray. Individual accounts documented by the ACLU.
16 is not a statistic. 16 is a mother who bled alone in a cell and no one came.
