The days, weeks, and months after delivering a new baby are some of most difficult and vulnerable in any mom's life. For most of us, this exhausting period is only manageable with the hands-on support of our friends and family: bringing us homemade food, holding the baby during a desperately-needed hot shower, and helping us find the strength and motivation to leave the house and push the stroller around the block to feel the sun on our face.
But for immigrant women in the U.S., this foundational support system has been destroyed. As ICE terrorizes communities across the country, postpartum women are afraid to walk out of their front doors. Dads are scared to stay with or even visit their partners and new babies. Family and friends aren't able to provide the much-needed support they want to—all for fear of an arrest or violent confrontation with ICE. And the health toll—both mental and physical—is extremely serious.
