Medical staff performed painful, invasive procedures and gave her medication without explaining what was happening or getting her consent. She was told she had miscarried—and immediately returned to detention. For over two months, Alicia continued bleeding and suffering intense uterine pain, radiating out to her limbs and getting progressively worse. She begged to see the doctor over and over, but each time she was denied follow-up medical care. Only after she was deported, still sick, did doctors diagnose and treat a serious infection caused by the lack of treatment she endured while detained. ICE policy requires adequate medical care for pregnant detainees. Alicia never received it. What’s happening inside these facilities is dangerous and it is wrong.
