Aliya Rahman and Marimar Martinez are U.S. citizens who were apprehended by ICE—and yesterday they told Congress about what they’d experienced.⁠

Rahman, who is disabled, was forcibly removed from her car by ICE agents while on her way to a medical appointment in Minneapolis and ended up in a hospital after being denied medical care in detention. Martinez, while on her way to a church charity drive in Chicago, was shot five times by agents after attempting to warn her neighbors that ICE was in their area.⁠

“Listening to our witnesses today and what they have been through at the hands of our government should be difficult for anybody who claims to love this country to hear,” Rep. Summer Lee said after their testimony. “We cannot just stop at abolishing ICE, because that’s no longer enough. We need to prosecute their wrongdoings and hold these agents, and leaders, and anyone who had to do with that, accountable.”⁠
