weho_times The man who was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in West Hollywood this week has been identified as 73-year-old Alberto Cabral, according to neighbors and a fundraising campaign established by community members. Cabral was reported missing Wednesday morning while tending to his regular landscaping route in West Hollywood. Witnesses said he was taken into custody on Gardner Avenue near Hampton Avenue. A homeowner in the 1200 block of Gardner Avenue said the man detained was his gardener of about 10 years. The homeowner said ICE agents, wearing masks, detained Cabral without asking questions, placed him into a vehicle and drove away. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Cabral’s family states that he has lived in the United States since he was 15 years old and has no remaining family or support system in Mexico. According to the campaign, Cabral suffers from serious medical conditions, including heart disease and diabetes, and requires multiple daily medications, including a blood thinner to prevent stroke. The campaign states that Cabral recently sustained injuries at work, including fractures to his lower leg and tailbone, and currently has an open wound that places him at high risk for infection if his condition is not properly managed. “For over a decade, Alberto worked faithfully in our community and became a familiar, trusted presence on our block. He is the primary source of income for his 97-year-old mother and 70-year-old wife, both of whom live in Los Angeles and depend on him financially and emotionally,” reads a statement.
