University of Maryland professor appears from Oklahoma detention center, judge to decide on bailBerhanu Kibret, a University of Maryland School of Pharmacy professor, appeared virtually in a U.S. immigration court in Colorado on Tuesday for a bond hearing following his detention by ICE last month.Kibret was arrested on July 21 at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport while preparing to return from the annual American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy meeting in Grapevine, Texas, just north of Dallas.ICE stated that Kibret entered the U.S. legally in 2021, but his visa expired in May 2024. Kibret's attorneys argue that his arrest and detention were unlawful, claiming he has valid work authorization and applied for relief before his J-1 visa expired.They told the judge that Kibret was on a period of authorized stay at the time of his arrest, saying, "He's done everything he needed to."During the hearing, Kibret appeared via video call from Diamondback Correctional Facility in Oklahoma. His attorneys submitted 18 letters of support, many from colleagues at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Kibret's attorney said she was surprised when the judge requested more time to make a decision.The attorney told WBAL-TV 11 News that Kibret is doing well under the circumstances but expressed concern that his condition could worsen the longer he remains in detention. If the judge grants Kibret bond, his attorney said, he would be released as soon as payment goes through and his case would then be moved to Maryland.
