ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — A Mexican national was arrested Sunday morning after officers responded to a call of a man passed out behind the driver's wheel in Escambia County, leading to a DUI arrest, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Elberta German Sausage Festival moves forward under new nonprofit According to an FHP news release, Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies received a report of a man passed out behind the wheel of a pickup truck on Delano Street at the intersection of North Pace Boulevard.LOCATION:An Escambia County Sheriff's sergeant parked his patrol vehicle in front of a truck on Sunday to prevent a crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. (Photo courtesy of the Florida Highway Patrol)The incident reportedly happened just before 3 a.m.An ECSO sergeant was first on scene and saw the man sleeping in the truck, with his foot on the brake and the cabin door locked, according to the release.The sergeant parked his patrol vehicle in front of the truck to keep it from rolling into the intersection and called for assistance from FHP's DUI unit, the release said.When troopers arrived, they reportedly tried several times to wake the driver but were initially unable to.A few minutes later, they woke the driver and unlocked the vehicle, according to officials.They put the vehicle in park, at which time they noticed "several indicators of alcohol impairment," the release said.The driver was identified as 38-year-old Fernando Costilla Espinoza from Mexico, and he did not have a valid driver's license, according to FHP."Due to Mr. Costilla Espinoza's level of impairment, Escambia EMS was called on scene to assist," the release said. "Mr. Costilla Espinoza was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated."After being medically cleared by medical staff, Mr. Costilla Espinoza was placed under arrest."He has been charged with DUI, refusal to submit to a lawfully requested breath test, and driving without a valid driver's license.ICE was notified of the arrest and determined Espinoza was not in the country legally.
