De Soto, Kansas, community concerned for man deported after ICE detentionDE SOTO, Kan. —Neighbors in De Soto, Kansas, are rallying behind 67-year-old Ublado Calderon, who was detained by ICE agents two weeks ago while riding his bike and later deported to Mexico. Calderon was a familiar figure in the community, known for riding his bike daily, picking up cans, feeding stray cats, and keeping the area clean. “He was on his bike, every day, all day long,” said Sandra Calderon, a neighbor. “I thought that was unfair, like why him, what did he do?” Ashley Wilson, a former neighbor, described Calderon’s dedication to the community. “He came every single day. Rain, snow, just every day,” she said. Calderon’s detention has left his loved ones and neighbors saddened and concerned. “I was really sad, lots of emotions. I could only imagine how scared he was,” Sandra Calderon said. Wilson shared how much Calderon’s absence has affected her family. “He was a very kind, genuine face. My kids were excited to see him every day. He just stopped showing up, and they ask questions, and I’d have to explain what some things in the world are. But they miss him,” she said. Former co-workers noted that Calderon had suffered from heart problems, adding to their concerns about his well-being. Calderon’s loved ones said he had no criminal record, had lived in the U.S. for 20 years, and had no family in the country. His attorney explained that Calderon had worked to become a U.S. citizen but struggled with understanding the system and faced significant financial challenges. A recent photo shows Calderon in Cancun, Mexico, where he was dropped off after being deported. Sandra Calderon said his loved ones are now trying to help him adjust to life in Mexico. “We’re trying to arrange plans to where he is from originally and establish some kind of a life there, transition to it slowly, and call it home,” she said. KMBC has contacted ICE for comment and is awaiting a response.
