Juan David Arango-Caicedo and his wife Nicole Ulerio are in desperate need of financial support to continue fighting for Juan’s release from an ICE detention center at Moshannon Valley Processing Center and moving through due process for U.S. citizenship. He chose to risk his life to journey to the U.S. to flee Colombia’s dangerous conditions. On his journey, he experienced severe, unspeakable trauma. When he crossed the border, Juan, an innocent, law-abiding man, was unjustly imprisoned beside criminals and murderers. After 3 months, he was lawfully released from detainment on humanitarian parole because it was determined that Juan’s life would be at risk if he were to reenter Colombia. Since then, he has resided in Reading, Pennsylvania with his wife Nicole, a U.S. citizen. Immediately, he started the process of becoming a citizen. He received a work permit and social security number. Before his recent detainment by ICE, he waited patiently for his green card application to be processed and approved. His petition from USCIS has already been approved. He reliably attended his ICE check-in appointments and did not avoid the authorities. ICE detained him while he was at a check-in appointment. He made every effort to follow the law and do things the right way, but ICE disregarded it all to achieve their cruel purposes. Now, Nicole is flooded with bills. To achieve his release, she has to work with lawyers that are costly. In a single week, she spent $4500 on lawyer fees and the costs keep piling up. On top of that, the detention center is 3 hours away. In order to visit Juan, she needs money for gas and hotels. These visits are crucial for keeping Juan’s spirits up. Last, everything costs money in the center, even making a phone call or writing a letter to Juan comes with a charge. Juan and Nicole deserve better. I have witnessed their deep, committed love for each other. Together, they have dreams of starting a family and buying a home in a safe place. He is exceedingly hardworking and consistently provides for his wife. He is responsible and respectful of the law at all times. His demeanor is always gentle, kind, and honest. All around, Juan is an incredibly upstanding man who makes a significant, inspiring impact in his family, community, and country. Honest, law-abiding, and hardworking people like Juan make this country the prosperous place it is, and his deportation would be a great loss to our nation.
