He soon found out that person was detained by ICE agents. Carlos Nzolameso is a pastor at Rehoboth Christian Church in Westbrook. Last Thursday, he received a call from a member of his congregation who was searching for their friend, Evaristo Kalonji."I tried to call Evaristo, but his phone was not working," Nzolameso said.Evaristo Kalonji (Courtesy of Carlos Nzolameso) Nzolameso says he and others contacted Kalonji's workplace, friends, and the local police department, but could not get ahold of him.Later in the day, Nzolameso spotted Kalonji's car in a parking lot down the street from his home."When I opened the car, I see the key inside the car, and I don't see nothing else, and then I said, 'Okay, Evaristo has been arrested,'" Nzolameso went on. Although Kalonji has no criminal record, the pastor suspected he could have been detained by federal agents.Then, later in the day, Nzolameso received a call from Kalonji, who said he was taken into custody by immigration agents.He was being held in Massachusetts."He's been arrested. (WGME)Nzolameso says Kalonji has a pending asylum case and that a court date was originally scheduled for this year, but it was recently postponed to 2028."It's not fair. Sometimes, the process takes five, 10, 15 years to wait, but now they start arresting and taking people. It's not good," Nzolameso said. According to online documents, Kalonji has filed an emergency Habeus Corpus petition with the DHS. That means Kalonji believes he is being unlawfully detained.
