AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A video circulating on social media has raised concerns over the detention of a woman by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Austin.Mayor Pro Tem Chito Vela posted the video on X on Thursday. It was initially posted on Facebook by Leonardo Pelaez, where it has nearly 300,000 views as of Sunday.Vela wrote in the caption of the X post, "ICE arrested the mom of a 9-year-old at a school bus stop in Austin, leaving him alone and crying. The video has profanity and is heartbreaking to watch, but it shows the fear/pain of what happened. This is evil. This is wrong. And it has to stop."Vela's office told KXAN on Friday that it had "heard from community members and neighbors that the child went to school after the incident. While we don't have more information on the mother's detainment, we know the child is ok and with family."KXAN also reached out to ICE for more information about the arrest.A spokesperson shared a statement that said ICE had encountered the woman, whom the agency referred to as an "illegal alien," on Oct. 1 during a vehicle stop."After learning she was the sole caregiver for minor children who may have been left without supervision, ICE released her approximately 10 minutes later. No children were present during the stop, and ICE has not confirmed that the child heard crying in a circulating video is related to [the woman]."The statement from ICE continued, saying the agency "encourages all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App," and that the US is offering people $3,000 and a free flight to self-deport."We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream," the statement continued. "If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return."Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
