Generally, any use of this data should plainly state that it is incomplete, an ongoing cataloging effort, and certainly an undercount of these incidents — especially true for the brandishings category. More specific limitations follow: Manual data collection The data is being collected by independently reviewing media reports. There is a lot of media and only a few people collecting the information. Shootings or brandishings that do not get news coverage will not be included, though we are working to expand to collecting incidents via social media posts and firsthand photo and video accounts. Injuries An incident_type of “Shooting by immigration agent” with zero injuries means we are not presently aware of any injuries reported, not that there were definitely no injuries. Off duty The off_duty column refers to incidents involving off duty immigration officers. These incidents were added after the initial publication of the dataset on the story page. If you downloaded shortly after publication download the latest information from either this page or the story page. Locations Latitude and longitude information is estimated based on a review of the news reports associated with the incident. Some may be less precise than others. For example, if a news story referenced a neighborhood, but provided no address or cross streets, those location coordinates will be biased toward the center of a neighborhood and therefore less precise than entries with more exacting location reports.
