(SBG San Antonio)SAN ANTONIO — DILLEY, Texas - Nearly a dozen 911 calls placed from inside the immigration detention center in Dilley provide a rare look at children experiencing medical emergencies at the facility, including infants and young children. The newly obtained recordings include calls from medical staff inside the Dilley detention center requesting ambulances for children, some as young as 11 months old. In the calls, medical staff remain calm as they describe children in distress and ask for emergency help. The calls involve a range of medical issues, including breathing problems with oxygen levels dropping. Other children are described as lethargic with fever and bronchitis. The emergencies are unfolding behind closed doors at a detention center that has drawn criticism from lawmakers over concerns about conditions and access to medical care.Democratic U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, who has recently visited the Dilley detention center, said on social media that there have been at least 11 medical emergencies at the facility since September. In a separate post, Castro said a teenage boy with appendicitis waited in pain for several hours before he was taken seriously.CoreCivic, which owns and operates the facility, said earlier this month that the health and safety of detainees is their “top priority,” and that 24/7 medical and mental health care is provided.Castro said ICE is not meeting the basic needs of children and is calling for the closure of the Dilley detention center.
