Four undocumented Guatemalan employees at D-Hand Car Wash in Southington were administratively arrested on Monday for being in the U.S. without authorization. SOUTHINGTON, Conn. — Word spread quickly across Connecticut after four Guatemalan employees at a Southington car wash were arrested Monday by federal law enforcement personnel. On Thursday, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations agency in Hartford confirmed that four non-U.S. citizens from Guatemala who entered the United States without authorization were taken into custody. ICE officials described what occurred as “administrative arrests.” The four apprehended individuals are employees at D-Hand Car Wash in Southington. ICE officials said they were apprehended during a random worksite enforcement outreach inspection that happened there on Monday, June 9. HSI New England Special Agent in Charge Michael Krol added that it is necessary to mandate "compliance with federal employment laws" to assure a level and competitive business environment. “Businesses, such as D-Hand, that employ unauthorized workers not only undermine the integrity of our immigration system but also gain an unfair advantage over law-abiding companies,” Krol said. “HSI is committed to identifying and addressing these violations to protect both the legal workforce and honest businesses.” ICE said it is responsible for enforcing the business community’s compliance with federal employment eligibility requirements and conducts extensive worksite enforcement initiatives to target employers who are violating U.S. immigration laws.
