BRIDGTON, Maine — A Bridgton man who spent nearly seven months in immigration detention returned to Maine Sunday night after officials released him and granted him lawful permanent resident status. The group 'Lake Region Indivisible' said Saturday that Marcos Gaspar-Da Silva, a Brazilian asylum-seeker, was released from immigration detention in Arizona after being transferred from detention facilities in three states.A small group of supporters greeted Gaspar-Da Silva at the Portland Jetport when he arrived around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night. Fighting through tears, Gaspar-Da Silva apologized to the group who came to greet him for not "being excited" and said that while he's appreciative of the people who advocated for his release, he just "wants to go home." "I love Maine, but I don't feel good," said Gaspar-Da Silva. "I'm physically good, but my mind, I'm not good. Right now, I don't feel happy."The group said Gaspar-Da Silva experienced health problems and what his family described as unsanitary conditions during his detention.Pingree, in a statement Saturday, said Gaspar-Da Silva had been released, granted lawful permanent residency and reunited with his wife, Alessia. "I'm hoping once we get home and settle in for a little bit that a little more normalcy can happen because for 7 months I've been fighting," said Alessia. "We're going to need time and probably therapy." Pingree said her staff supported Alessia during the ordeal, helped expedite her petition to bring her husband home and pressed detention officials about his medical care.ICE and the Department of Homeland Security had not independently confirmed Gaspar-Da Silva's release or immigration status as of Monday morning.
