A Venezuelan man with pending asylum and a valid work permit was detained by ICE in South Florida, prompting demands for investigations into similar detentions.A 59-year-old Venezuelan resident of Doral, Humberto Castro, was detained by ICE agents while driving to work and was handcuffed after being pulled over. His daughter said he arrived on a visa, has an asylum application pending, holds a work permit valid until 2030, and has no criminal record. The detentions occur amid a wave of immigrant arrests in South Florida affecting the largest Venezuelan community in the United States. Two exile organizations, Veppex and Amavex, sent a report to members of Congress seeking an investigation into detentions of Venezuelans with pending asylum and other immigration cases. The report links impacts to the rollback of temporary and humanitarian protections and alleges detentions for deportation, including to distant third countries such as Liberia, while noting authorities do not publish data on criminal records or pending proceedings. It cites that as of July, 65,765 people were in ICE custody, over 70% without criminal records, and documents at least three Venezuelans detained between July and August despite work authorization and pending asylum claims. "“My dad has a work permit valid until 2030. His asylum case is pending. He was on his way to work, driving normally, and they pulled him over and handcuffed him,” she said." #immigration-enforcement #asylum-seekers #ice-detentions #venezuelan-community #us-congressional-oversight[|]
