ICE makes 39 arrests during 'targeted operations' in WisconsinImmigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 39 people in Wisconsin in the last week during targeted operations, leaving families and advocacy groups in Milwaukee calling for helpMILWAUKEE —The Department of Homeland Security confirmed to WISN 12 News that agents made 39 arrests across Wisconsin last week during what the agency described as "targeted operations." Advocacy group Voces de la Frontera, concerned with the recent increased presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, shared video footage showing masked agents in Milwaukee detaining several people. "We have definitely seen what I would describe as a targeted ICE surge," Voces de la Frontera executive director Christine Neumann-Ortiz said. On Tuesday, Voces brought together family members of those detained, many of whom expressed desperation to reunite with their loved ones. "I beg you to help me. I'm asking elected officials to please assist us," said the sister of Luis Manuel Valley Gonzalez. She said her brother has a kidney disease and is in urgent need of medical care. She said she has not been able to talk to him since he was detained on Friday. A DHS spokesperson stated that many of those arrested have "criminal histories including sexual assault, DUIs, police obstruction, domestic abuse, property damage, dangerous drug possession, and other crimes." However, Voces de la Frontera contends that the majority of detainees do not have criminal records like Estenderly Polanco. Family said the native of the Dominican Republic was captured on cellphone footage being removed from an SUV. Her fiancée, who spoke with WISN 12 News anonymously, described the incident. "They were tailing them from El Rey grocery store. They had started tailing them," she said. "And then, like one vehicle jumped in front of him to stop him from keep going. And then they all jumped out on them."Polanco's family said she was aggressively removed from her car near South 26th and Mitchell streets, with her 7-year-old child witnessing the incident. Her family said Polanco, a mother of two, is currently being held in Chicago. "I want her to come home. Her kids want her to come home. And we're going to fight for her," her fiancée said. "All of the illegal aliens arrested have or will receive full due process. They will remain in ICE custody pending their removal or removal proceedings," the DHS spokesperson said. ICE agents were seen wearing face masks during the operations, which is against the Milwaukee city ordinance. Additionally, the Milwaukee Common Council passed measures in March prohibiting ICE from operating on city property. Milwaukee police confirmed that ICE agents used District 2's parking lot on Monday to stage their operations without providing advance notice. "We set forth a package, laws, things that must be followed, and we will hold people accountable. So, of course, it's disappointing. It's disappointing that there were commitments and promises made to the community, and we will make sure those are upheld," said Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic.
