(TNND) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is calling on a North Carolina jail to turn over a woman convicted of sexually abusing a middle-school boy, the agency announced. ICE identified her as Rebeca Fratila-Ilies, adding that she is an illegal immigrant from Romania. "ICE lodged an immigration detainer against Fratila-Ilies with Guilford County April 17, asking them not to release this child predator back into the community," ICE Director Todd M. Lyons said in a news release on Thursday."Fratila-Ilies is a lawful permanent resident, but she’s been convicted of sex crimes against a child, which means she’s amenable to removal," Lyons added. "She’s currently in removal proceedings and ICE is standing by to deport her upon a Department of Justice immigration judge's order."ICE said Fratila-Ilies was convicted of two counts of carnal knowledge of a child and statutory rape and sentenced to 10 years in Staunton, Virginia. She was later released early, according to ICE. Fratila-Ilies was arrested in North Carolina for a probation violation on March 12, 2025. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office then contacted ICE Charlotte, saying the agency had her in custody.ICE learned that Fratila-Ilies came to the U.S. as a child and was granted a green card in 2006. "Immigration officials later determined that her mother had filed a fraudulent asylum case -- meaning that Fratila-Ilies' lawful permanent resident status, which was derived from her mother's fraudulent asylum case, was invalid," ICE noted."An immigration judge ordered her removed in absentia in 2017, but she appealed the decision and an immigration judge granted her relief from removal in 2022. That relief was granted before her sex offense convictions," according to ICE.If transferred into federal custody, Fratila-Ilies would face deportation proceedings after any criminal matters are resolved.
