MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) - ICE agents arrested a man on Main Street in Middletown this week after following him from the courthouse, according to the city’s mayor.The arrest happened Tuesday morning at the intersection of Main and Court streets. Several ICE agents were seen boxing in a car in the middle of the road and taking a man into custody.Ed McKeon, a board member of Middlesex Indivisible, said the man, who is in his 20s, is a nursing student at Southern Connecticut State University.“A young man Hispanic male was grabbed by ICE and border patrol agents right here,” McKeon said.A spokesperson for Southern Connecticut State University released a statement on Friday.Middletown Mayor Gene Nocera said he did not believe the man was a Middletown resident.“We’re obviously concerned as anyone would be. We want to make sure all our residents and community visitors are safe,” Nocera said.Nocera said the man was followed after he left the courthouse and police were unaware this was happening.Last month, the Middletown Common Council passed a resolution to strengthen the TRUST Act.“It ensures if we are called in to participate we will be asking the agents to produce a warrant and that all due process rights are followed through as they should be,” continued Nocera.McKeon spearheaded that resolution, but said it is not enough.“What it says is that the TRUST Act is only as good as the ability to get a hold of the police and tell them something is happening,” he stated. “If he had known that was the case, he might have called the police and said I’m being stopped can you come over and check it out.”McKeon said word spread among people in town quickly when ICE was spotted.“This is my neighborhood. I live two blocks from here and it’s shocking to know ICE is here grabbing people off the street,” he added.A group of students at Southern Connecticut State University said they planned to hold a rally outside the university’s library on Monday at noon in support of the man.Copyright 2026 WFSB.
