The incident occurred April 7 near Interstate 5 and Sperry Avenue, where agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) opened fire during what officials described as a targeted vehicle stop. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed local deputies were not involved in the shooting and assisted due to the location. Authorities confirmed the suspect was shot during the encounter and transported to a hospital for treatment. Federal officials identified him as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez. Federal prosecutors have now charged Mendoza Hernandez with assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon.
