Syracuse, N.Y. – Three men were detained by federal immigration agents in the Westcott neighborhood Thursday morning, according to witnesses.The federal agents stopped the men, who were in a white Jeep, shortly before 9 a.m. in the 400 block of Westcott Street, according to witnesses and video they captured.Soon after, Syracuse police were patrolling in the neighborhood. At first, the city officers stopped to help what they thought were other Syracuse officers or Onondaga County sheriff deputies executing a warrant, police said. When the Syracuse officers realized it was an ICE stop, they backed off immediately, said Sgt. Thomas Blake, a spokesperson for city police.As they were getting ready to drive away, an ICE agent approached the cops with a request: They wanted a crash report written. The federal agents told Syracuse police one of the men they detained had driven the Jeep into one of their vehicles, Blake said. None of the witnesses syracuse.com talked with or police saw the accident unfold.The Syracuse officers wrote a crash report and left the scene. Syracuse police were not involved in the arrest of the three men, Blake said. Police would not elaborate on the crash report or damage sustained to the cars at this time. The men, who have not been identified, were taken to ICE’s Central New York headquarters office in Mattydale, a friend of one of the men told syracuse.com. That friend asked not to be identified for fear of retribution at her federal workplace.Later Thursday, the Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network shared photographs of the three ICE vehicles used in the stop and said in a social media post that three people were detained.The detention and arrest on Thursday is one example of dozens of similar incidents in Onondaga County. In the first two-and-a-half months of the year, more than 80 people were swept up by ICE, syracuse.com has reported.Most of those incidents happen quietly with little public knowledge. This time, neighbors took video.A video posted to Facebook captured the tense interaction. Multiple ICE agents can be seen in the video wearing bulletproof vests reading “Police - Immigration and Customs Enforcement.” There were three unmarked vehicles with flashing lights surrounding a white Jeep.In one of the videos posted on Facebook, a man who is sitting in the back of a federal vehicle tells an ICE agent he just came from Miami a couple of days ago.“I got pictures of you,” the ICE agent says. “You’ve been here for months.”The man tried to offer more information.“I have your warrant. We’ve been watching you,” that ICE agent tells the man. “You’re under arrest.”Two men who live in the area, who declined to give their full names to syracuse.com, say they saw the detention. One said he watched from his porch as the Jeep was surrounded by three unmarked ICE vehicles. He said two of the men inside the car complied with ICE’s demands to surrender, but a third, the driver, tried to fight back and flee. The man who ran was tasered several times before being tackled to the ground by three or four ICE agents, they said. Syracuse police did not show up until after the detention, they added.The recent passage of a state law bans police officers from cooperating or working with ICE investigations. Mayor Sharon Owens has previously said SPD will not cooperate with ICE immigration enforcement.ICE has faced increased scrutiny, including in New York, since Donald Trump took office and began a nationwide crackdown on immigrants.A city employee later arrived to put a boot on the car, one of the witnesses told syracuse.com.
