A man driving by saw two agents talking to a woman in a white van on the side of the road in Grants Pass last week. He started to film. Someone sent the video to the woman’s family members, they said on a GoFundMe page. They identified her only by her first name and said she’s a mother of four, with the youngest 10 years old. Social media posts like the one capturing Juana’s arrest and cars abandoned on the side of the road — which also happened in Juana’s case — provide signs that immigration enforcement is once again rising in Oregon. The Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition also has tracked and verified a recent increase in arrests after a dramatic dip in March and February. As of Tuesday, the advocacy group had so far confirmed 32 immigration arrests statewide in June after 43 in May and 30 in April. That compares to about a dozen arrests reported to the group in March and about 15 in February. Email newsletter signup After immigration authorities arrested a person at the Rockwood Community Market in Gresham around mid-day Thursday, organizers canceled its weekly farmers market from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. “We take community safety extremely seriously and will not put our vendors or customers in the path of harm,” market organizers said. “This does appear to be a targeted situation but out of caution we are cancelling today’s event.” In a count released earlier this year, federal authorities have arrested more than 2,100 immigrants in Oregon under the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration crackdown. Federal authorities have declined to release new figures for the state. A U.S. Homeland Security spokesperson cited security reasons for declining to answer questions about immigration enforcement in Oregon and wouldn’t give details of Juana’s arrest. “The Trump Administration is utilizing all lawful options to carry out the largest deportation operation in history, just as President Trump promised,” the unnamed spokesperson said in an email. In Grants Pass, Michael David McAuley videotaped Juana’s arrest on June 9. McAuley said he was driving by when saw what he thought was a “spooky” situation with two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. He decided to turn around and parked in his doctor’s office lot across the street. McAuley said he stood on the sidewalk nearby and got out his phone to document the encounter. He said he didn’t completely know what was going on until he saw the word “ICE” on the vest of one of the agents. “I am not part of an organized watch group but will be a person who will try to do the responsible thing,” he said. “What if it was a domestic violence act, child abduction, or attack on an innocent?” He posted his video on Facebook. It shows the agents talking to Juana, then handcuffing as she stands outside her van and putting her in an unmarked red car. One of the agents then goes into the van, emerges with the keys and locks all of the van’s doors before leaving it on the side of the road. Juana’s family declined to be interviewed but confirmed her arrest on the GoFundMe page and said she was driven immediately to the Tacoma immigration detention center. The page said she has no criminal record and is now facing deportation.
