On December 4, Victor attended his yearly appointment at an immigration law enforcement office in Dallas as part of his ongoing immigration process. He has attended this same appointment every year. Typically, these appointments are routine: he checks in, is scheduled for the next appointment, and leaves. He usually walks in and walks right out. However, this year, Victor was detained by ICE. Victor has not committed any crimes in this country or in his country of origin. He has not violated any part of his immigration process, yet he was still detained. Victor is a loving father and husband, a skilled electrician, who pays his taxes and worked 60–80 hours a week to provide for his family. Victor’s wife, Madison, and their three-year-old twins, Nathan and Natalia, rely on Victor’s income to survive. As a result of Victor’s wrongful detention, the family went months without income, lost their home, and had to rehome their family pets — a dog of five years and two cats of nine years. The family also had to give away most of their belongings because they no longer had a home to store them in. Victor was moved to several detention facilities but spent the majority of his confinement at the Eden detention facility in Texas. The detainees were not provided adequate food — sometimes the food contained mold and was inedible, and there was often not enough food or clean drinking water. He spent the colder seasons there, and the facility did not provide heat, even during freezing temperatures. The conditions in these detention facilities were torturous, and not a single immigrant in the facility had committed a crime. Many immigrants have committed suicide in these detention facilities because of the physical and mental toll the conditions of these facilities have taken on them. The physical and mental toll the detention center took on Victor caused him to lose an alarming amount of weight — 10 pounds within the first 14 days of being there. Victor knew how much weight he was losing because the immigrants were frequently weighed to ensure they were being minimally cared for. Flu and illness spread throughout the detention center, with no medical care or access to medicine. Victor remained sick the entire time he was there. ICE does not have cause to deport Victor, so they were holding him without reason and ignoring a court order to release him. After more than 100 days of being detained, Victor made the painful decision to voluntarily depart, as there was no end in sight for his detention and no guarantee that he would not be detained again after his release, despite having done nothing wrong and being in this country legally. He could not survive in detention much longer. We believe the intention behind these long detentions without reason or cause is to ruin the life you worked so hard to build here, leaving you with nothing left to fight for, and to torture you into leaving and giving up your immigration status. As of today, the family is still not reunited. Victor has not seen his wife or children in since December. Victor missed his twins’ third birthday, as well as Christmas and all four of their birthdays together. Victor’s absence has deeply affected the family. Nathan and Natalia desperately need their father. More than anything, the family wants to be reunited in a safe place where they can all be together again.
