July 1, 2025Updated July 3, 2025, 12:15 p.m. PTA silver SUV drove through a crowd of protestors outside the Federal Building in Eugene, Oregon, during a protest against ICE.Protestors were demonstrating against the alleged arrests of immigrants at routine ICE check-ins.This story has been updated with new information and because a previous version contained an inaccuracy.Editor's note: Eugene Police Department revised its statement on July 2 to say the federal vehicle protesters attempted to block did belong to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.A silver SUV exiting the Federal Building in downtown Eugene on July 1 drove through a crowd protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement near the intersection of Pearl Street and Sixth Avenue around 4:30 p.m.While no one was injured, protestors were left shaken.Eugene Police Department officials initially said the federal vehicle was not associated with ICE, but later revised that statement to say it was an unmarked ICE vehicle. The driver was leaving the federal building parking lot when protestors got in the way and reportedly damaged the SUV. Officers responded after receiving an emergency call for assistance.No one was arrested, but officers received a criminal mischief report from federal officials.The Party for Socialism and Liberation in Eugene called on locals to take part in a nationwide "Call Out Sick" protest in solidarity with immigrants who the protesters said are being arrested at routine ICE appointments, detained and sent to the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Washington.Dozens of people showed up to the protest, chanting phrases like, "No fear, no hate, no ICE in our state," and "Power to the people, no one is illegal." Signs read "ICE out of Lane County," "ICE = Nazis," and "Families belong together and free.""We are here to have a visible presence to show that ICE is not welcome in Eugene, it's not welcome in our state and it's not welcome in our country," said Kaleigh Bronson-Cook, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation.According to a legal observer outside of the federal building, arrests and transports have been occurring on a weekly basis at the Eugene Federal Building.Local attorneys raised alarm bells in June that immigrants visiting the downtown Eugene office for routine check-ins were being arrested and denied access to attorneys.On July 1, a group of people were transported from the building to two silver, unmarked SUVs parked on Seventh Avenue, away from protestors.Katherine Jones said she saw what appeared to be five detainees walking in a row with their hands behind their backs, accompanied by four to five people wearing vests and face coverings."This is terrible. This is a horrible thing that's happening," Jones said. "We will be back. We will be mobilizing more and more every week.
