TONIGHT WE OBTAIN AN E-MAIL FROM THE PRINCIPAL OF IMMOKALEE HIGH SCHOOL SAYING MANY STUDENTS AT OUR SCHOOL ARE NOW GETTING CALLS THAT THEIR MOM OR DAD HAS BEEN DETAINED. SO A STUDENT AT THE SCHOOL TOLD ME THE MOOD FROM BOTH CLASSMATES AND TEACHERS HAS CHANGED. I KNOW MANY OF MY FRIENDS WERE AFFECTED BY THIS. Witnesses reported that ICE agents and Florida state troopers detained more than 30 people on Wednesday. Gulf Coast News obtained an email from Collier County Public Schools sent by principal Daniel Boddison of Immokalee High School, revealing that many students are receiving calls about their parents being detained.The email sent out to teachers and staff said:"This morning, we have been made aware that ICE is doing a major raid in Immokalee. They are stationed at every major intersection and pulling over every bus, van, and trucks. Many students at our school are now getting calls that their mom or dad has been detained. This is going to be a hard time for our school community, so please look out for any student struggling and send them down to guidance. As a family, we need to pull together and support our kids at this time."Sol R., a student at the school, said, "I know many of my friends were affected by this. I think there was an email sent by the principal, saying that there was over 18 students, I think, that had to be that were affected."An anonymous Immokalee High School graduate, with her cousin, who is a student, said, "Children are getting called down to be notified that their parent or both parents have been taken."Witnesses say ICE agents were also seen detaining people along Collier Boulevard headed toward Marco Island. A witness reported seeing three people removed from a landscaping truck. In a tense exchange, a state trooper was heard saying, "I don't give a (expletive) that you're a citizen, your (expletive) obstructing my investigation. I'm a (expletive) state trooper. I don't give a (expletive) about your nationality," after Gabriel Gonzalez said "I'm a citizen" when he got pulled over. Gonzalez, a Collier County resident, said he was stopped by troopers on his way to work and questioned about his legal status. Gonzalez, a U.S. citizen, felt he was targeted due to his Mexican heritage."I feel harassed, yeah. And I think I think, no, everything. I mean, it's racism where we live, you know, because the criminals are out there. The criminals are not landscapers," Gonzalez said.In Immokalee, neighbors are concerned for families whose children might not have a parent at home tonight.
