The incident occurred after the father dropped off his child, and several agents, some masked, used unmarked vehicles to block him in, said Mayra Ramirez, the school owner, and Nivea, a parent who requested her last name be withheld due to fears of retaliation.The agents reportedly did not present a warrant but showed the father a picture of himself and asked if it was him. When the father and others, including Ramirez, requested an arrest warrant or detention order, they were told not to interfere with the agents, Ramirez and Nivea said. ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.An officer from the Boise Police Department responded to the school after a third party called, and there weren’t any other law enforcement agencies there when the officer arrived, Haley Williams, a spokesperson for BPD, told the Statesman. “BPD was not involved with, or aware of, any arrests at that location.” She said.Estefania Mondragón, executive director of PODER of Idaho, criticized the agents for not providing a warrant, calling the detention "disgusting" and accusing ICE of racial profiling. "They’re not going to Croatian schools. They’re not going to Bosnian schools," Mondragón said. "They’re going to a Spanish-language preschool — it sends a very clear message to who they are targeting."The Boise School District and other Spanish-language schools in the area have responded to the incident by reassuring parents about the documentation status of their staff and reiterating that all students are entitled to a free public education regardless of immigration status. Superintendent Lisa Robert emphasized the district's commitment to student safety and privacy in an email to families.The incident comes amid heightened immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump's administration, which has loosened policies allowing ICE to detain individuals near protected areas like schools.
