About 300 students walked out of school “in response to the ICE activity in our community last week,” McMinnville School District Interim Superintendent Kourtney Ferrua said in a statement. Videos on social media showed hundreds of young people and others lining Northwest Adams Street, many holding signs protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Here’s whyICE agents detained 17-year-old Christian Jimenez on Friday while he was driving his father’s car during the school’s lunch break. According to a video shared by Jimenez’s brother, the teen told officers he was a U.S. citizen, but they detained him anyway. The Department of Homeland Security said in a post on the social media site X that the teen had used his car to “violently attack” ICE and border patrol agents, “colluding” with the driver of another car to “barricade” agents and then fleeing. He was arrested for allegedly impeding federal law enforcement officers, the department said. Ferrua said classes were continuing as usual this week. “Our goal is to provide a normal day of learning as much as possible,” Ferrua wrote in her statement. “We are continuing to support our students who have been impacted by recent events and are working collectively with community partners to meet their needs.” Four U.S. citizens were detained in Oregon last week, advocacy group Oregon for All said, including two women who were filming ICE activities.
