CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Activists are speaking out following another death of a detainee at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Clearfield County. The recent death of Fouad Saeed Abdulkadir, an African migrant, occurred shortly after he complained of chest pains, according to federal immigration officials. "I've spoken to the community members here who have expressed that he was loved by many and his passing is a great loss," Faten Odeh, executive director of CAIR Ohio says. "I also was able to attend his funeral prayer and the cars were lined up for blocks, for many blocks."This marks the second death at the facility in recent months, following the death of a 32-year-old Chinese migrant in August. "How many deaths will it take because one is too many," Zeynep Emanet, civic engagement manager at CAIR Philadelphia asked during the virtual news conference on Monday. "Every day that this facility operates is a day that the county chooses profit over human dignity."Clearfield County Commissioner Dave Glass has expressed his intention to vote against renewing the contract with ICE next September. However, Commissioners John Sobel and Tim Winters support the contract, stating they have toured the facility and do not see mistreatment or harsh conditions as alleged. They also say there are no issues with medical care.A detainee at Moshannon Valley, Sereyrath "One" Van, spoke out saying detainees are often denied medical care at the facility. Van also says he believes living at the detention center is more dangerous than the migrants in it being on the streets. "You want to know what dangerous is? Dangerous is being in detention in Moshannon Valley, not having access to adequate medical care. Being housed with people with severe mental illness is dangerous. Being subjected to solitary confinement after any infraction is dangerous."While the focus remains on deaths at ICE facilities like Moshannon Valley, the impact on taxpayers was also highlighted. Emanet emphasized, "This is not just an immigrant issue, and politicians shouldn't just wave it off as this is just an immigrant issue, we can move on. This is an everyone issue."Some activists continue to push for the closure of detention centers. Elena Emelchin Brunner, an immigrant rights organizer with Asian Americans United, stated, "Detention centers must shut down. Health conditions at Moshannon have been highlighted for over a year and the recent death was avoidable and shouldn't have happened. It needs to get shut down now."The GEO Group, which operates the facility, directed all questions to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. No response has been received from ICE yet.
