(KATU) — The family of a 27-year-old man are seeking answers after he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Vancouver on Thursday afternoon. The man was allegedly injured in the process.Family members told KATU News that Jose Paniagua Calderon was taken into custody at around 12:45 near 4th Plain and Z Street and said ICE agents shattered his car windows and ran over his leg while he was on the ground.According to family, Paniagua Calderon is being held in the Tacoma ICE detention facility, but they were unable to learn any information about his condition and whether he received medical treatment.“We still don’t know his condition, how he’s doing, or if he got medical attention,” Paniagua Calderon’s brother, Cristian Paniagua, said. “We don’t know nothing.”He went on to say his older brother visited the ICE detention center in Tacoma on Friday morning but was denied access to Paniagua Calderon or any information on him.Cristian tells KATU his brother was an unnecessary target, saying he does not have any criminal background or reason for arrest.“He’s a good kid,” Cristian said. “He just works on construction, he does roofing, he goes to church, and then he stays at home. He doesn’t even go out at all.”Cristian said he and his other family members are pleading for his brother to get justice.“They call us criminals, but they are doing criminal things,” Cristian said. “They’re the ones that are, like, abusing of their power.”The Vancouver Police Department is now investigating the incident, saying, “Based on the information regarding a vehicle that is alleged to have struck a person within the city limits of Vancouver, per our policy, the Vancouver Police Department will be conducting a traffic investigation to determine the facts.”Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin denied the allegations on social media."Never happened. ICE did NOT run over this illegal alien's leg. Pure theatre. No Injury. After ICE officers applied wrist restraints, Paniagua launched into an Oscar-level performance, dramatically screaming while officers simply moved his vehicle off the roadway," she said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. She continued, "He walked around normally immediately after without issue and received a full medical evaluation including multiple X rays that showed ZERO fractures, dislocations or injures."KATU reached out to ICE and DHS for more information. There has been a GoFundMe set up to cover medical needs, legal assistance, travel, and other expenses needed in efforts to bring Jose home.
