More than 20 migrants detained in the North Country, NCIA saysLAKE PLACID, N.Y. —More than 20 migrants living and working legally in Northern New York were detained by federal agents over the past week, according to local group North Country Immigrant Allies. NCIA officials said that multiple people were detained during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation on Mirror Lake Drive in Lake Placid on May 28.Federal officials from the Department of Homeland Security said that the migrants they detained in Lake Placid were "known criminal illegal aliens whose criminal history includes felony assault and driving under the influence."Three of the people detained were identified by DHS as:Gabriel Antonio Vera-Garcia, of Venezuela - charged with felony assaultWilber Jose Colina Villegas, of Venezuela, convicted of driving under the influence and domestic assaultManuel Alberto Garcia-Perez, convicted of driving under the influence and charged with a second DUI offenseSeveral days later, seven employees of a restaurant in Lake Placid were detained on June 2 while traveling to work between Saranac Lake and Ray Brook, the group said.NCIA said they believe more than 20 people have been detained during the last week.The group said that despite "significant misinformation" in the online community, they learned from employers that none of the detainees were allowed to show their legal documents before they were sent to detention facilities.They said that all of the detainees had authorization to work and were legally permitted to work and live in the United States.NBC5 has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for more information. They said in part "ICE will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders and those ordered removed by an immigration judge from the U.S."
