by WJAC staffSun, April 19, 2026 at 4:20 PMUpdated Mon, April 20, 2026 at 12:07 PMAround 100 detainees at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Clearfield County have launched a hunger strike in order to protest dangerous conditions, including contaminated food, inadequate medical care and staff indifference to a detainee who lost consciousness on the floor of his unit, according to a report by PennLive.In a statement by the Shut Down Detention Campaign, the strike was reportedly triggered after a man on Unit Four began vomiting a green substance, turned pale and then fainted while staff members failed to respond, instead directing other detainees to help the man, dismissing it as a common cold.According to a witness who spoke with PennLive, the man was the third person to be hospitalized with similar symptoms.In their statement, the Shut Down Detention Campaign is demanding an immediate release of those sick and on the hunger strike, and that the permanent closure of the prison by having the Clearfield County Commissioners end contracts at the prison.In their statement, the campaign also stated that detainees are reporting their meals consisting of only stale bread, curdled milk with black substances and water with worms floating in it.The campaign stated that at least three people have died since the facility's opening in 2021.The campaign added in their statement, "The Shut Down Detention campaign calls on Clearfield County commissioners Tim Winters, John Sobel, and Dave Glass to immediately end the County’s contracts with ICE.The Shut Down Detention Campaign demands:- Clearfield County Commissioners immediately end their contract with ICE and GEO Group- Immediate release of detainees who are sick and on hunger strike. They need their freedom to access proper medical careWe stand with the hunger strikers. We stand with the families of those who have died. And we will not stop until Moshannon is shut down."
